🫀Living in the Grey

Imagine being in a dark room, a beam of light appears in front you. The separates into several lines. What do you see? A rainbow, the fusion and separation of seven distinct colours. Harmony in difference, unified in beauty. When a rainbow appears it is awe inspiring, hard to critique. There is no competition, orange isn’t better than blue or green. A rainbow captures the spirit, it is bigger than us, a reminder of our place in the cosmos.

A colour like grey is in between, not quite white or black. Grey isn’t the easiest to use creatively. Notwithstanding, Shonda Rhimes chose the perfect title for the television series, Grey’s Anatomy. The series is tumultuous and complex. The protagonist Meredith Grey exists in the grey of her past, present and future. The pursuit to become a surgeon leads to many successes and setbacks. I think the charm of the series is the countless diverse stories and themes. Each character in the ensemble cast goes on an individual journey. Meredith stabilises the show as a consistent motif, in the narrative.

The series was released on ABC in 2005. It presented viewers with new insights about the human experience. The show is led by a woman with a diverse cast, in positions of high regard. The complexities of workplace politics, race, gender, faith and sexuality; all explored and more. Grey’s anatomy humanises doctors, patients and public service staff. The dialogue, creative decisions and character development mirror real life.

Season 9 is my favourite season of Greys Anatomy. It’s devastating, capturing the chaos of life, and the hope we must fight for. Each episode explores psychological shifts, focusing on healing, reclamation and moving through trauma. Viewers experience this, as each character explores different paths through grief and pain. The ability to overcome tragedy is a remarkable thing to consider and a strength we possess.

Life is one hell of a show. The thing is WILD! In the storms of life, it’s humbling to remember that we will go on. The sun will still rise, a baby somewhere is born, a life will pass on to the other side. As long as we are alive, our circumstances can and will change. Life is a lot of grey, but in each day, there is a rainbow waiting to take your breathe away.
